Hello and welcome to Room 4 at Birches Elementary! My name is Ms. Laura Bontempo and I am the new 4th and 5th grade MD (Multiply Disabled) teacher at Birches Elementary. As a first year teacher in the state of New Jersey, I am excited to bring my experiences to Birches!
A little about myself:
Born in Pennsylvania, I have a Bachelor's Degree from West Chester University where I studied Adapted Physical Education and Nutrition. During my time in the Adapted Physical Education Program, I was able to work with both children and adults with a variety of abilities in both recreational and educational settings. I have coached Special Olympics soccer, taught adapted dance classes, and worked as an adapted aquatics coach.
Most recently, I earned a Master's Degree in Exceptional Student Education (Special Education) with endorsements in Reading and ESOL from The University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. During my time in Florida, I worked as a teacher's aide in a dual grade level classroom and took over as the full time teacher in my second year. Going from the assistant to the head teacher gave me vast experiences in managing a classroom and making learning fun and enjoyable for ALL students.
We work HARD in room 4 AND have fun doing so. I believe it is crucial to promote independence and give each student the tools they need to thrive in both educational and social settings.
