Physics - Marking Period 1 Project
Professional Interview
Due:
Assignment: The physical sciences are currently in tremendous demand in the job market. To better acquaint yourself with the impact of the physical sciences (such as Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Geology, etc.), this marking period you will research a career involving these areas. Start by selecting a particular career (chemist, engineer, architect, optician, etc.) that employs the physical sciences. You will then research some general information about that career. ("Facts on File" is a good resource for this.) Finally, you will conduct an interview with someone (not a close relative) currently working in that field. This project is designed to increase your interviewing and writing skills, as well as illuminate the many facets of the physical sciences.
Requirements: The paper should contain total of 3-5 pages of information, plus have a title page and bibliography page, be typed/word processed and double spaced using a font no larger than 14 point. The paper should include as a start a description of the place where the individual works, a summary of the type of work done on a daily/weekly basis by the individual, the amount of formal education required, any additional training or recertification needed, what types of courses they needed to complete in high school, and what personality traits are helpful in this field. You may also wish to ask about the outlook for the future of this career. A transcript of the interview may be included, but will not count toward the 3 – 5 page requirement. In your bibliography, be sure to include the name of the interviewee, their work phone number and place of employment, and the date that the interview was performed, as well as least one outside resource. REMEMBER – This is 10% of your marking period grade.
Special Information: Be sure to set up your interview well in advance. Do not delay until the middle of October to set up the interview. Remember these are professional people. Conduct yourself as if you were applying for a position. Be polite. Dress professionally. Make sure you have researched the career ahead of time so that you sound well informed. It is also good manners to send a brief thank you note after the interview.
Remember – Due October 20 – Late papers will not be accepted!!!
