There are a variety of special education programs and related services at the Birches School. The students within these programs have been identified by the child study team as eligible for special education. Once the individual education program has been written by the I.E.P. team, the students are placed in one or a combination of the following programs:

In-Class Support

Pull-out Replacement Resource Center

Self-Contained Primary or Intermediate

Students who participate in the in-class support program receive instruction in the regular education class. The special and regular education teachers provide instruction and modifications to the curriculum.

Students who receive instruction in the pull-out replacement resource program go to one of the designated resource center rooms for instruction. The special education teacher provides instruction in the specific curriculum areas that have been determined by the I.E.P. team. These students may only participate in a pull-out replacement program no more than half of the instructional day.

The students within the self-contained special education class receive instruction in that class for the majority of their instructional day. Instruction is provided by a special education teacher.

In summary, Birches School provides a diverse special education program. The special education teachers are trained in specialized reading programs such as , Fundations, The Wilson Reading System for Intermediate Students, and Project Assist.

Likewise, they participate in many professional development programs that have significantly enhanced the quality of the special education programs within the Birches School.
