The Fact Recall Challenge
Dear Parents,
I am writing to tell you about a school wide math challenge for everyone at Birches School. It is called the Fearsome Fifteen! The challenge will be to learn the hardest math facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The teachers, Mrs. Miller, and I know that the students work hard learning the facts, but there are some facts that are just a little harder to learn and to retain.
So for the next 15 weeks the students will be given 5 facts each week to practice, to learn, and then to show they know them. Everyday someone will announce the fact for that grade. The classroom teacher will write it on the board, and the students will be writing it on every paper they use during the day. Then on Fridays, the students will have a very quick quiz on just those five facts for the week. Any class that gets 100% will be announced or visited by Mrs. Miller for their hard work. How neat would it be if every week every class had 100%?
In addition at the end of the 15 weeks, any 2nd or 3rd grader who learns the Fearsome Fifteen facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division will be entered into the “Birches School Gold Club”.
We think all of the Birches students want to be successful! Please encourage your child to share the fact with you everyday, as well as continue to practice all of the basic facts using fact triangles, EM games, or any other way you provide at home. We hope this will be a fun challenge! We will begin this Monday.
