"Move those Muscles" is the main theme for the students in Birches School. Each of the physical education classes begins with exercises consisting of warm-up, a small cardio warm up, and follows with strengthening and stretching exercises. The importance of exercising and being active is always stressed in order for the students continue a similar regimen at home. Units of teaching in the primary grades include ball and beanbag activities, running and tagging games, motor skill development, rope activities, tumbling and gymnastics, and rhythms. Units of teaching in the intermediate grades are fitness testing, skills and games involving soccer, field hockey, football, volleyball, basketball, and softball, tumbling and gymnastics, and rhythms. Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart are the fundraisers that the students participate in for the American Heart Association.
