BIRCHES
GLOUCESTER , WASHINGTON TWP |

“Excellence is not a
skill. It is an attitude.” –Ralph Marston
Birches School, a
unique educational community where each child learns with
confidence, promotes a motto of “Excellence in Education.”
Innovative teaching practices, outstanding curriculum,
exemplary professional development, and a safe learning
community underscore Birches School’s commitment to
education. This desire to provide an extraordinary model of
education was recognized by the state of New Jersey. Birches
School has been recognized as both a Governor’s School of
Excellence and a Star School. These prestigious awards are
a testament to the hard work and outstanding programs that
make Birches a leader in the educational community.
The heart and soul of
education are curricular opportunities for children.
Enriched activities within a student-centered curriculum
promote critical thinking and problem solving. Continued
integration of the Everyday Math Program in grades one
through five has provided students with activities that move
from a concrete through an abstract continuum. A
comprehensive balanced literacy model provides for strategic
reading lessons, guided and independent reading and writing
opportunities, and a systematic approach to word study. An
observable connection exists between literacy and the
content areas of Social Studies and Science. Students
explore historical, geographic, and scientific concepts by
reading literature relative to the world around them.
Programs such as Essentials of Writer’s Workshop, the Wilson
Reading System, Fundations, and the Literacy Academy
continue to enhance the outstanding literacy curriculum that
is in place.
Exemplary academic
performance is demonstrated by continued improvement of math
and literacy skills of all students who encompass our
learning community. Birches Elementary School met the
adequate yearly progress (AYP) benchmarks, for the total
population and each disaggregated sub-group established by
No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Combined scores of third,
fourth, and fifth grade students on the NJ Assessment of
Skills and Knowledge 2007 test showed that 93.6% of our
students achieved a proficient/advanced proficient rating in
literacy. Likewise, combined scores of third, fourth, and
fifth grade student showed that 93.6% of our students
achieved a proficient/advanced proficient status in
mathematics. Birches School’s documented increase in
student performance is a direct result of the refinement of
teaching strategies, the strengthening of the collaboration
and collegiality among professionals, and the delivery of
consistent instruction across grade levels to insure
success.
Birches School’s
mission is to enable its students to develop a sense of
self-worth through interpersonal skills, while promoting
positive attitudes and fostering honesty, integrity,
academic excellence, and good citizenship. The philosophy of
“open doors, open hearts” is conveyed each day. Birches
School was a recipient of a Best Practice by the New Jersey
Department of Education for the program “Promoting Positive
Peer Relationships.” Interactive lessons presented during
class guidance sessions and supported by classroom teachers
during class meeting times have enhanced the climate of
Birches School. Students use strategies to resolve conflicts
and make good choices.
Technology applications
have been effectively infused into the curriculum. Computers
on Wheels (COWs), handheld computers, and electronic
fieldtrips provide students access to a world of knowledge
that exists beyond the doors of Birches School. Fast
ForWord, a computer program, accelerates learning by
developing cognitive skills, memory, attention, processing,
and sequencing through a series of activities. An on-site
Interclass Space Station, a “Live Aquarium”, and Living
History Museum are several examples of the enjoyable and
innovative ways that students are able to use technology and
showcase their knowledge. The use of computers, smart
boards, document cameras, and LCD projectors has enhanced
instruction. Morning televised broadcasts have been
coordinated by fifth grade students under the direction of
the technology teacher. Portaportal has been used as a
vehicle to share websites with students, colleagues, and the
community.
Students have continued
to develop talents outside the academic arena through the
participation in clubs and service projects. Students
participated in the Gift of Giving Project and Alex’s
Lemonade Stand. Family Math and Literacy programs
extend the school learning community to parents and
guardians. Our Good Morning Math, Working Writers, Circle
of Friends, and after-school Homework Club offer additional
opportunities beyond the instructional day. The Birches
School PTO is an active and integral part of the school’s
educational program. Parents and the community are welcomed
and encouraged to become involved. A successful educational
program depends on the cooperation of parents, teachers, and
the community. Birches School if fortunate to have such a
great team!
By integrating
multimedia technology, creative projects, guest speakers,
and service projects, Birches School provided opportunities
for student to expand their knowledge and develop good
character. Students were able to reach beyond the text, set
goals for the future, and see education “come alive, “
thereby connecting learning in school to future endeavors.

Birches School Earns
Governor’s School of Excellence Award
Three Washington Township Elementary Schools are
recipients of the 2004-2005 Governor’s School of Excellence Awards
from the New Jersey Department of Education. Birches School was one
of twenty two schools statewide cited for their “significant
improvements in academic achievement as measured by state test scores
in language arts and mathematics,” using 2001-2002 as a baseline.
Professional development, test scores and technology helped Birches
School qualify for the award. The school’s literacy rate has gone
from 46 to 94 percent proficiency in the past five years.
The Governor’s School of Excellence is a highly
coveted award that validates all of the worthwhile programming and
exceptional achievement that sets schools apart. In addition to
acknowledging academic achievement, the Governor’s Award recognizes
schools for advances relating to growth in literacy, parental
involvement, community partnerships, the use of instructional
technology, improved learning for special needs and/or specialized
populations and professional development. Birches School applied and
competed for the award. The school will use the $25, 000 awarded to
enhance student achievement and support continuous school improvement.
“The Governor’s School of Excellence Awards
program celebrates schools that are steadfast in improving and
providing the very best for their students,” Education Commissioner
William L. Librera said. “While we have myriad schools throughout the
state who demonstrate success on a daily basis, this important program
celebrates the steps some schools have taken to improve, and the hope
that they will be at the forefront of education in the future.”
