The Birches Reading Program
We are very excited to be using the Harcourt Trophies Reading Program. The Philosophy of integrating the language arts components, reading mechanics, and comprehension in a way which challenges learners to think, process, store, interact, infer reason, view, and consider information correlates beautifully with the newly revised Language Arts Literacy Curriculum. With this in mind, each classroom accommodates learners at varied levels with diverse needs. Supportive programs are also offered to students that could benefit from extra small group instruction.
The four block model for balanced literacy is utilized to deliver instruction. The Strategic Reading Block involves whole group read aloud, shared reading, and reading in small groups at individual levels. Another component is Reader’s Workshop. It is a time for independent reading of self-selected material, and related activities. Writer’s Workshop explores the various forms of writing and develops the skills needed. Finally, Word Study allows the manipulation of words, word patterns, and word families.
The underlying premise that is embedded in the curriculum philosophy is that teaching children HOW to read is just a beginning. Teaching them to LOVE to read is the challenge and goal.
Any questions or concerns about Birches reading program can be directed to Mrs. Beth Rastelli, Reading Specialist. Parents can find out more about the Harcourt Trophies Program at http://www.harcourtschool.com/parent_resources/trophies/links.html
