Music
My name is Holley Haynes and I have the pleasure of being your child’s first music teacher. Music is taught once a week in the classroom for 20 minutes. At Grenloch Terrace Early Childhood Center we believe that all children are musical. In music class, we foster the children’s musical potential through listening, singing, chanting, moving, dancing, and playing instruments to a wide variety of music. A variety of musical experiences builds a tonal and rhythm vocabulary they can call upon later in their music education. Movement is an important aspect of early childhood music education as it assists with developing children’s singing voices and body awareness. Each year music and physical education classes are combined to allow for more movement experiences. Songs, chants, and activities are connected to classroom themes. Sign language as well as sight words are incorporated into each music lesson. An understanding of music allows children to connect to the music in their community and provides them with a creative outlet to express themselves in a positive way.

Art
Art class is a fun and exciting place to be. The children develop their creativity and fine motor skills through the use of various art medium. Along with the use of crayons, markers, scissors and glue, they also get to experiment with materials such as pastels and paint. In class they learn about how the elements of art, line, color, shape, form, value, patterns, and texture are used in creating art. The children get to know interesting arts and artistic styles by creating their own masterpieces. Art lessons reinforce learning in the other academic areas. Vocabulary words and sign language are incorporated in art similar to those emphasized in the everyday classroom. Art projects connect the themes and events of the school year. The children gain pride and self-esteem by seeing their artwork displayed throughout the school and they look forward to the big art show at the end of the school year. |
Physical Education
My name is Diane O’Malley and I have the pleasure of being your child’s first Physical Education teacher. Physical Education (also known as “gym”) is taught once a week for 20 minutes. In my classes we learn all kinds of activities and movements. In September we kick off the school year with learning our locomotor skills: skipping, galloping, sliding, leaping, hopping, and jumping. Each of these skills play a key part in each activity we learn. In December we start playing team sports: soccer, basketball, pillow polo, scooter hockey, nucome, parachute, jump rope, and t-ball. Smiles and happy voices surround our gymnasium. On nice weather days we enjoy having gym outside on the gym field which is located in the back of the school. On colder days we play in the all purpose room.
The proper dress on PE days is sneakers and comfortable clothes. If you should ever need to contact me my extension is 4457 and my e-mail address is domalley@wtps.org. Remember I am just a phone call away.
Have a wonderful year,
Diane M. O’Malley
