Visualizing Portion Sizes
Picturing portion sizes in your mind can be a valuable tool when trying to control your food intake, whether for weight loss or gain, or to help control cholesterol or blood pressure. Strive for healthy proportion among the food groups on your plate; one-half of the plate should be covered with fruits and vegetables, ¼ whole grains, and ¼ lean protein and low-fat dairy.
Visualize your portions by using this standard guide:
- 3 oz cooked meat, fish or poultry = 1 box of eight crayons
- 1 cup cooked rice, pasta or cereal = 1 tennis ball
- 1 oz hard cheese = 1 domino
- 1 medium fruit or 1 cup fruit or vegetable = 1 baseball
- 1 tsp butter = 1 die
- 1 Tbsp peanut butter = 1 ping pong ball
- 1 medium baked potato = 1 computer mouse
- 1 pancake = 1 CD or DVD
It is not just what we eat that counts, but how much of each food.
