2008-09 School Budget and Second Question

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - Residents of Washington Township tonight voted in support of the Washington Township Public Schools’ proposed 2008-09 school budget, agreeing to an increase of $207.70 for the average Washington Township homeowner. Taxpayers endorsed the local portion ($67,786,250) of the District’s operating budget ($130,016,718) for the 2008-09 school year. The voting total was 2,910 in favor and 2,741 against the proposed budget.

The second question to partially fund benefits for the District’s 73 food service workers was endorsed overwhelmingly with 3,739 votes in favor and 1,832 opposed.

“We would like to thank the taxpayers for having the welfare of our students in their hearts when casting their votes in support of this budget,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cheryl Simone said. “It is with their support that we will preserve our programs, class sizes and the integrity of the District’s educational process and continue with our pursuit of excellence in education. The Board of Education is happy and pleased, too, that the community saw the value of our dedicated food service staff and a need to maintain them in their current capacity. We will work closely with this department to ensure that their futures are secure in our District.”

Washington Township voters selected three new members to the Board of Education with newcomers Scott Dzierzgowski (3,030 votes), Kurt Snyder (2,707 votes) and Chuck Wiseley (2,669 votes) all earning three-years seats on the Board.
