WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Bunker Hill Middle School seventh-grade students in Mrs. Amanda Wesh’s English/Language Arts class got to see their name in newspaper ink on Friday, January 20, 2017, thanks to work they did for Courier-Post reporter Carly Q. Romalino.
Mrs. Wesh and Mrs. Tina Casale had their students write letters to the President addressing how they think he could help local community, what students look forward to in the future, and how they feel about America in general.
Many of the students picked an issue that particularly affected them or their families. Whether this was a sharp rise in property taxes, or the addition of braille on menus at chain restaurants, or even something more in-depth, the students had to keep their arguments short and concise, as they would if writing in a newspaper.
Once the essays were complete. Romalino visited the class. She talked about her job and the interesting stories she has covered during her time as a reporter. Then, she had several of the students stand and read their essays while she recorded them.
On Friday, the day of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the essays ran in full in the print edition of the Courier Post, as well as online. The story and accompanying videos can be found here.
