WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – “5-4-3-2-1-Launch!” That was the command from South Jersey-area Rocketry Society member Bruce Canino, as fourth- and fifth-grade students in the Whitman Elementary School’s ELEMEnTS (Elementary Learners Engaged in Mathematics, Engineering, new Technologies and Science) program looked on with excitement. Tuesday, May 23rd, was the culminating activity of the program’s unit on the physics of flight, and Canino was on hand to help the students launch miniature rockets they built during class.
During the unit, the students – in all six District elementary schools – learned about aeronautics, Newton’s laws and more. They experimented with fins, determining how placement and size can affect flight. Then, they were able to build the rockets and prepare them for flight.
On Tuesday, the students reported to the school playground, inserted the starter and streamer into their rocket body and placed the rockets on Canino’s launching pad. He attached the engines and then let the students push the launch button, one at a time. Their rockets skied high into the air before landing not far from their starting point.
Similar launches are planned throughout the week for ELEMEnTS students across the District.
