WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Perseverance and determination are the two theme words for the month of May at Wedgwood Elementary School, and on Monday, May 22nd, they received a visit from a local musician who embodies both. Williamstown native Dawson Coyle, who made it through the final 32 in the most recent season of NBC’s The Voice, brought his story to Wedgwood, performing and speaking in front of the entire student body inside the gym.
Coyle was one of 40,000 people who attended the first wave of tryouts for The Voice. After singing three songs during an audition in New York City, he was selected as one of 200 artists flown to California for the formal auditions. There, he made the final 100, then the final 48, and finally, the top 32, earning a spot on the TV show when he was picked to join Team Blake Shelton. He received mentoring from Luke Bryan, as well. Later, he was saved to Alicia Keys’ team before his elimination. He brought his story of perseverance to Wedgwood.
“I have a passion for passion,” Coyle told the students. “I want everyone to find something they love, and then to pursue it. If you have a dream, pursue it. Be determined and persistent. My dream was to be on The Voice, and I did it. You can reach your dreams, too.”
Coyle mixed in his message between several sets of songs. He played a number of his own original material, while also mixing in some covers of popular tunes. Some had the students swaying and singing along with him.
Coyle’s visit was made possible thanks to a sponsorship from the Wedgwood PTO.
