WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Fifth-grade students filled the bleachers of the Birches Elementary School gym on Wednesday, February 25th, armed with hand-made signs and their heartiest of voices. The screaming and cheering went on for nearly an hour, as they backed their classmates in the school’s annual Staff vs. Students basketball game. OK, more than a handful were rooting for teachers, as well, as a great time was had by all involved.
The teachers walked away with a narrow, 38-32 victory, despite a spirited late rally by the fifth-graders. Three boys and three girls from each fifth-grade homeroom were randomly selected to play in the game, and they rotated into play throughout thanks to the work of coach Mary Byatt. Resource teacher Joanne Henry wore the whistle to coach the teachers’ team, with physical education teacher Rick Vogel wearing the stripes as the game official.
