WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Washington Township High School physical education teachers and student volunteers welcomed approximately 60 elementary students for Fitness Achievement Day on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, in the 9/10 wing of Washington Township High School. Elementary students, who were selected based on top “Fitnessgram” scores, at the District’s six elementary schools – five boys and five girls from each building – performed several stations in the high school’s Project Adventure curriculum, as well as team-building physical and mental exercises in the 9/10 gymnasium.
A unique physical education program that challenges students to use more than their athletic ability and allows teachers the opportunity to build students’ character, Project Adventure emphasizes team building and cooperative learning through a challenging series of physical stations. Station examples include having team members help each other across a series of swinging tires, balancing themselves on a huge seesaw, swinging over a bar and landing into a series of hula hoops, and more.
Fitness Achievement Day was the origination of Physical Education Department Supervisor Donna Costa. WTHS physical education teachers Tony Procopio, Kim Griffiths, Rich Bostwick and Matt Groark, as well as WTHS student volunteers, joined the elementary physical education teachers in running the day’s activities.
Fitnessgram events used to determine Wednesday’s competitors included: Pacer Test; Back Saver Sit and Reach; Flexed Arm Hang; Curl Up; and Trunk Test.
