WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Two Washington Township Public Schools middle-level teachers recently attended the South Jersey Summer Institute for Educators facilitated through the Chamber of Commerce of Southern New Jersey and sponsored by regional companies with local ties. Julie Lyons, a science teacher at Bunker Hill Middle School, and Christopher Spina, a social studies teacher at Orchard Valley Middle School, were chosen to attend and honored at a Graduation Dinner held July 23 at the Mansion in Voorhees.
At the ceremony, guest keynote speaker Dr. Kenneth J. Lacovara, Professor of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science at Drexel University, wowed the audience with descriptions of his discovery of Dreadnoughtus schrani, found in Patagonia and Argentina, as well as descriptions of the treasure trove of fossils found in southern New Jersey and a dig site in nearby Mantua. Washington Township Science Department Supervisor Dr. Patricia Hughes attended the festivities, representing the district.
Institute attendees visited a variety of workplace venues in order to familiarize themselves with career opportunities in the region that can be shared with their students. Visitations included: The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Coperion K-Tron; New Jersey Water Company; Lockheed Martin; Mannington Mills; PSE & G; South Jersey Gas; Subaru of America; NAES Corporation – Logan Generating Plant; and Rowan University.
Lyons and Spina were chosen as two of 15 teachers hosted through sponsorship to attend this prestigious institute, which ran for three weeks at Gateway High School in Woodbury Heights.
