WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Washington Township High School English as a Second Language teacher Laurine Sibilia has been selected as a presenter at the New Jersey Education Association’s (NJEA) Convention November 10-11, 2016, in Atlantic City. Sibilia also will share this presentation at the NJTESOL Convention (New Jersey Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) in New Brunswick on June 2nd and 3rd.
Additionally, Sibilia has received a partial scholarship to attend the University of California at Berkeley’s Summer Institute for Educators, which focuses on social and emotional learning.
“I believe this summer experience will help me further develop and refine my presentation for November,” Sibilia said. “Most importantly, all of this work has a direct impact on our very diverse group of high school English language learners.”
Sibilia, an educator for the past 17 years, has spent the last 11 years in the District. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Georgian Court University, a Master of Arts degree in reading from Rowan University, and a Master of Education degree with a TESOL specialization from Northeastern University. Sibilia serves as a lecturer in the University of Pennsylvania’s English Language Program.
“Laurie truly has been a teacher-leader for the Washington Township Schools and has represented us well,” District World Language Supervisor Rosemarie Armstrong said. “It is gratifying to see her gain recognition at the state level where she can have a positive impact on New Jersey teachers. With an ever-increasing diverse population, Laurie’s positive psychology strategies are essential in assisting English Language Learners and their families into assimilating to the United States. We are so fortunate to have someone with her expertise and passion.”
