WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Three additional guidance counselors – one at each school – will be assisting students at Washington Township’s three middle schools after their hiring was approved by the Board of Education at its Tuesday night public meeting. Briana Baud, Jaclyn Centifonti and Natalie Marakowski will begin work at Bunker Hill, Chestnut Ridge and Orchard Valley middle schools, respectively, for the start of the 2016-17 school year.
The counselors’ role involves meeting with new students, orienting them with procedures and opportunities, and helping with course and subject selections. Their job duties also include: interpreting test scores and aptitude to help with career path planning; working with teaching staff and administration to develop programs to address needs of individual students, as well as discovering their special abilities; assisting with arrangement of tutors, homebound instruction and summer school; working with students individually on personal crises, health and emotional adjustments; and conferring with parents in relation to the student’s school experience and factors related to academic and social programs when necessary.
Baud comes to Washington Township and Bunker Hill Middle after spending the past two school years as a counselor at Pennsville Middle School. In addition to guiding students and families through academic performance, social conflicts and other situations, Baud served as Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) Specialist, school safety leader, PARCC testing administrator, and as an Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS)/Section 504 team member. She helped implement Pennsville’s Positive Behavior Support program, developed small group counseling curriculum, and delivered classroom guidance on respect, responsibility, decision-making and teen-living lessons. Baud earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a Master of Education degree in counseling in educational settings from Rowan University.
Centifonti joins Chestnut Ridge Middle School after holding a similar school counseling position at Billingsport Elementary School in Paulsboro during the 2015-16 school year. There, she utilized individual and group counseling, as well as classroom lessons, to coordinate academic advising, crisis situations and social conflicts. She conducted HIB investigations, contributed to I&RS meetings, served on the school safety team, and assisted in writing, implementing and distributing Section 504 plans and yearly reviews of IEPs. Centifonti did an internship at Woodbury Jr./Sr. High School in 2014-15, where she worked closely with scheduling, transfer of records and with community outreach events. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Monmouth University and her Master of Education degree in elementary & secondary school counseling from Wilmington University.
Marakowski comes to Orchard Valley Middle School after spending the 2015-16 school year as a school counselor at Walnut Street Middle School in Delanco. There, she provided individual and group counseling to students focused on academics, career development, personal and social issues. She delivered a rotating six-week small-group counseling program for sixth-grade girls to assist with middle school transition and self-esteem issues. Marakowski consulted with teachers, administrators and parents in Section 504 and IEP meetings, counseled and supported students in short-term crisis situations, and helped eighth-graders with out-of-district high school applications. She was the school’s HIB specialist, I&RS coordinator, PARCC testing coordinator and safety team chair. Marakowski did her counseling internship at Oak Knoll Elementary School in Williamstown, and she completed a practicum at Winslow Township Middle School. She also served as a group counselor for the Aim High Science and Technology Summer Program at Rowan University.
