“We are very proud that Mr. Zachowski was selected to conduct the 2016-17 South Jersey Junior High Chorus,” District supervisor of visual and performing arts Bob Frampton said. “It is certainly an honor for him to be selected by his peers to lead the distinguished ensemble, but his selection also reflects positively on the Washington Township Schools Music Program. The students in the Junior High Chorus will have a wonderful experience under leadership.”
In his 13th year in the District, Zachowski spent his first nine years at Orchard Valley and Chestnut Ridge middle schools before moving to Washington Township High School in 2013. During his middle school stint, he taught chorus and music appreciation to students in grades 6-8. He was also the co-director of the OVMS drama club and directed the OVMS select choir. At WTHS, Zachowski directs the chorale, women’s chorus, mixed chorus, pop choir and show choir. He is the vocal director for the all-school musical, has taught music theory and also has been on staff with the marching band and indoor percussion ensemble. Since his appointment in 2013, the choir program has grown from 75 students to more than 175, and his choirs have earned superior ratings at the New Jersey American Choral Directors Association (NJACDA) High School Choral Festival. Through WTHS’s annual Pop Experience concert, his choirs have raised thousands of dollars in donations to Mother’s Cupboard, Stomp Out Bullying and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Zachowski received his bachelor of music in music education from The College of New Jersey in 2004, where he studied trumpet and voice. He also holds a master of arts in school administration from Rowan University, with both New Jersey principal and supervisor certificates.
Outside of school, Zachowski maintains an active performance schedule and has performed in productions with The Road Company, Spotliters, and the Trinity Players. He also has directed adult choirs and musicals for Spotliters and was the artistic director and music director for West Deptford Little Theatre from 2009-2015. From 2002-2010, Zachowski was a member of the Eastern Wind Symphony’s trumpet section. He is also a founding member of the regional cover band 39 Mariner and has performed thousands of shows at clubs, casinos, weddings and private events up and down the East Coast for the last 16 years.
