WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Wedgwood Elementary School first-graders in Mrs. Kristie Attardi’s class found a way to honor Earth Day (April 22, 2017) and make the world more colorful at the same time. On Friday, April 21st, the class put together boxes for “The Crayon Initiative” and then delivered them to classrooms throughout the school.
The Crayon Initiative is a Northern California-based non-profit that organizes collections of unwanted crayons. Those crayons are then remanufactured and provided to hospitals that are caring for sick children. Crayon wax is not biodegradable and provides a large clog to landfills, where 500,000 pounds of discarded crayons are disposed of annually, according to thecrayoninitiative.org. The Crayon Initiative collects these crayons, melts them down and creates the new crayons.
With boxes created, Mrs. Attardi’s students eagerly knocked on doors around Wedgwood to make the deliveries. The individual classrooms were excited to get their box and to get started with donations.
