Transitional First is a full-year program designed for children who need more time to acquire the maturity, learning habits, motivation and attention span needed to succeed in school. This is not a special education program. Admission to the program is a result of the child meeting established criteria gathered by the kindergarten teacher with input from the Readiness Center teacher and guidance counselor-not as a result of parent request. The concepts that are taught in kindergarten are extended and elaborated upon in T-1. Additionally, some first grade skills are introduced. T-1 provides a continuous progress, full-day program in which the children have extra time to grow and learn. Another feature is the small class size which is one half the number of students in a first grade classroom. The typical day consists of reading, language arts, math, science, social studies and a Related Arts. The Related Arts include art, music, physical education, PEP, library and computer education. Students have lunch and recess with first grade students. |
