Mrs. Johnson, Reading Specialist

The Reading Department at Whitman is responsible for implementing the school wide reading program, overseeing the Title I Programs (BSI Reading & Math), testing & placing all new students, and for acting as a resource for teachers, parents, and community members.

The district's four block model for balanced literacy is currently in its third year of implementation by Whitman Staff.  The components include:

1.  Stategic Reading - teachers model reading strategies using Hartcourt Trophies and/or guided reading groups

2.  Word Study - students focus on the features of words through sorting/categorizing activities, game boards, and cooperative learning groups

3.  Reader's Workshop - book selection, read alouds and SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) are emphasized during this block of time allowing teachers to meet with students individually.

4.  Writer's Workshop - modeling, mini-lessons, and stages of writing are reinforced through author studies, journals and specific genres.

Title I Programs for Reading and Math begin shortly after the school year begins. Students are identified based upon previous school performance, teacher observation/recommendation, state test scores and report card grades. If your child is selected to participate in either program, you will receive a notification letter and a compact that needs to be signed and returned. The teachers for each program is listed below:

BSI Reading Gr 1-2 Mrs. Johnson

BSI Reading Gr 2-5 Mrs. Masso

BSI Math Mrs. McGough

BSI Math Mrs. Hazel

If you are new to the district, you and your child will probably meet Mrs. Johnson. She will administer a placement test and determine which classroom your child will join.

Reading is such an integral skill that is necessary for all other subjects in school. If you are not sure how to help your child at home there are many resources, web sites and materials that are available.
