Medea Ashton (Class of 1999) – track and fieldMedea Ashton is recognized for her contribution to track and field, earning eight varsity letters in indoor and outdoor track and filed during her illustrious career at WTHS. An All-South Jersey and All-Conference selection, Ashton was tabbed the 1999 Gloucester County Sprinter of the Year while a team captain and two-time team MVP. Medea was a member of the 1600 meter relay team that competed in a national event and placed in the top six thus earning All-American status. This same relay team helped the Minutemaids win its first team state championship during the 1999 indoor season by winning the 800meter, 1600 meter, and 3200 meter relays. A list of honors and accolades she earned while in high school included: Gloucester County Hurdler of the Year (1998), 400-meter hurdle All-American (1998,’99), 400-meter hurdle Sectional Champion (1998,’99), 200-meter Sectional Champion (1998,’99), 4x400 All-American (1999), member of the New Jersey State Champion 4x400 relay team in the Meet of Champions and the 1998 4x400 sectional championship team, recipient of the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Sports and Athletics Achievement Award, and the New Jersey Governor’s Award in Arts Education for dance.While attending Morgan State University, she became the first female pole vaulter, as well as running the 400 meters and the 400 meter hurdles. In addition to being selected as a team captain, she earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Commissioner’s All-Academic Award.Medea is currently a captain in the United States Army where she earned “The Iron Woman Award.” In 2007 she was inducted into the Washington Township Military Hall of Honor. Dan Barbara (Class of 1987) – baseballA member of the Washington Township High School conference championship baseball squads in 1986 and 1987, Dan Barbara earned three varsity letters in baseball. Team captain, he was named All-County, All-Group IV, All-South Jersey and All-Conference and played in two Garden State Games and the Carpenter Cup tournament. He played four years of NCAA Division I baseball at Old Dominion University, played for the Philadelphia Phillies replacement team in 1995, served as head coach at Camden County College (1994-95) and was a player/coach of the seven-time champion Dr. Connor/Washington Township Tri-County semi-pro league. A class vice president while at Washington Township High School, Barbara was named Most Athletic by his peers in 1987. He played one season of varsity football, two seasons of varsity soccer and three seasons of varsity basketball at WTHS. Anita Brooks (Class of 1999) – track and fieldAnita Brooks distinguished herself in the sport of track and field at WTHS from 1996-1999 earning eight varsity letters.The 1997 All-Around Performer in WTHS girls track, Anita was team MVP in winter track in 1998 while a member of NJSIAA Group IV championship team. Team captain as a senior, Anita was a member of the 1600 meter relay team that competed in a national event and placed in the top six thus earning All-American status. This same relay team helped the Minutemaids win its first team state championship during the 1999 indoor season by winning the 800meter, 1600 meter, and 3200 meter relays. In addition, her 4x400 team placed 2nd at the prestigious Penn Relays that year. Anita was an All-Conference pick, the recipient of the Most Valuable Athlete award at the Camden-Gloucester County Relays, the WTHS Athletic Director’s Award, and the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Sports and Athletics Achievement Award. The 1999 4x400 meter relay team broke the school record which still stands today, en route to the East Coast Relay Championship title.Anita resides in Sicklerville, and is employed as a Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin.Eric Brumberg (Class of 2002) – swimming Eric Brumberg earned four varsity letters in swimming and culminated his career with Swimmer of the Year distinction from the Newark Star Ledger, the Courier Post, the Gloucester County Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer. The 2002 State Champion in the 200 individual medley and the 100 fly and a state finalist in all four years, he also was honored as the 2002 Washington Township High School Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Team MVP and was the recipient of the Clay Award. Brumberg excelled as a member of the Brown University swim team where he was a two-time team captain, a team MVP and an All-Ivy League Second Team pick. Mary (Katie) Connor (Class of 2000) – track and fieldKatie earned eleven varsity letters during her four years at WTHS; four each in Winter and Spring track, and three in Field Hockey.Tonight, the WTHS Sports Hall of Fame recognizes her for her outstanding accomplishments in the area of track. Katie Connor was a member of the 1600 meter relay team that competed in a national event, and placed in the top six thus earning All-American status. This same relay team was state champions in the 800 meter, 1600 meter, and 3200 meter relays while winning the teams fist team indoor state relay championship. They also won the NJ State Meet of Champions 1600 meter outdoor race.Katie served as team captain in both Field Hockey and track, and was selected team MVP in both. Her track honors include Gloucester County Champion, Olympic Conference Champion, All-South Jersey Team, Group IV State Champion, and East Coast Champion.Katie resides in New York City, and is a treasury analyst at Moore Capital Management.Courtney Heller (Class of 1998) – softballA three-year softball letterwinnner, Courtney Heller was named Second Team All-South Jersey as a sophomore, All-Conference, All-South Jersey and team captain as a junior and All-Conference, All-South Jersey and All-State as a senior captain. Heller earned NCAA Division III All-America status in her junior and senior seasons at William Patterson College where she was a four-year varsity starter and ser the school mark for most hits in a season and career. Chris Marcucci (Class of 1993) – footballA lineman with the Washington Township High School football team, Chris Marcucci accumulated a number of individual accolades for excellence on the field including: First Team All-South Jersey, First- and Second-Team All-State, AP First Team All-State, First-Team All-Group IV, First -Team Olympic Conference American Division, First -Team All County, North-South All-Star participant, Brooks Irvine Scholar Athlete of the Year, Maxwell Club Scholar Athlete and Brooks Irvine Lineman of the Week. A member of the National Honor Society and an outstanding student, Marcucci enrolled in the 1993 freshman class at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and was recruited to play football. He was tragically killed near the end of his senior year of high school in car accident. Marcucci, whose number was retired at WTHS and who has an award named in his honor, was named Second Team All-County by the Courier Post for the Team of the Decade (1990s). Lauren Mazziotto (Class of 1998) – field hockey, lacrosseA four-time letterwinner in both field hockey and lacrosse, Lauren Mazziotto was twice named Second-Team All-Conference and twice named First-Team All-Conference in both sports. She was a two-time All-Group IV honoree and two-time team captain in field hockey (1996, 1997), a Second -Team All-South Jersey pick (1996) and a First -Team All-South Jersey and Second -Team All-State selection in 1997 when she also earned Team MVP accolades. Mazziotto was a member of two All-South Jersey Second Teams as a goalkeeper in lacrosse and made Second -Team All-State while lacrosse team captain in 1998. She graduated as the school-record holder for career saves and saves in one season. She enjoyed a remarkable field hockey career at Ohio University and was a member of the USA Women’s National Team (2003) and the USA Indoor National Team (2001, 2004-06). She served as an assistant field hockey coach at NCAA Division 1 champion(2003, 2004) Wake Forest University before moving to the high school head coaching ranks. Her 2005 Chapel Hill High School squad captured the North Carolina state championship and she earned 2006 Conference Coach of the Year honors. Erin (McIntyre) McGirr (Class of 1999) – soccer, trackDuring her four years at WTHS, Erin earned twelve varsity letters in soccer, winter and spring track.In soccer, she was a four-year starter, two-time team captain, and the squad’s leading scorer and assist getter during her lasts three seasons. A two-time team MVP, she was a three-time All-Conference and All-Group IV honoree who earned All-South Jersey distinction in both her junior and senior seasons. Erin’s soccer career was culminated by being named to the Asbury Park Press All-State Team, selected to participate in the Olympic Conference All-Star Soccer Game, and being a member of the South Jersey Coaches Association All-Star Game.In track, she was a two-year captain in both indoor and outdoor track, and was team MVP twice in winter track/three times in outdoor track. Erin was a member of the 1600 meter relay team that competed in a national event and placed in the top six thus earning All-American status. This same relay team helped the Minutemaids win its first team state championship during the 1999 indoor relay championships by winning the 800 meter, 1600 meter, and 3200 meter relays. As a senior, she was the Olympic Conference Scholar Athlete and WTHS Herff-Jones Female Athlete of the Year. She earned an athletic scholarship for soccer and track to Rutgers University and was selected to the Big East Conference All Academic Team (2002,03).Erin resides in Cumberland, Rhode Island where she is an Assistant Sales and Marketing Director for M-F Athletic Company.Tom Philippi (Class of 1976) – wrestling, football A three-time District placewinner in wrestling, Tom Philippi placed second as a sophomore, third as a junior and first as a senior, completing his high school career with a school-best 149-19-4 record. He was honored as scholar-athlete for Washington Township and the Olympic Conference American Division. In addition to four years of wrestling, Philippi played two seasons of football and was a South Jersey Group 3 Second-Team pick and Atlantic City Press Tri-County First -Team selection as a team captain. He earned All-Conference status in both sports and went on to earn three varsity letters in wrestling and one in football at the University of Pennsylvania. Michael Sandelier (Class of 1994) – wrestlingA member of Team New Jersey that wrestled in the High School National Tournament, Michael Sandelier completed his outstanding career at Washington Township High School with a 105-9-1 record. He went undefeated (34-0) as a junior. A New Jersey state qualifier in all four years of high school, his wrestling resume included the following: four-time tournament champion and two-time MVP of the Collingswood Christmas Tournament, two-time District champion and District MVP, two-time Regional champion and two-time Super Regional winner, New Jersey State Champion and Runner-up, four-time All-Conference pick, three-time team captain and two-time All-South Jersey selection. Jennifer Scaffidi (Class of 2001) – basketballJennifer Scaffidi, the owner of four varsity letters and more than 1,000 career points in basketball, culminated an outstanding athletic career by garnering a slew of individual honors in her junior and senior seasons. In her senior year alone, she was honored as a member of the: Courier Post First -Team All-Group IV, First -Team All-Conference and Second- Team All-South Jersey, First -Team All-Gloucester County (Gloucester County Times) and First -Team All-South Jersey (SJ Coaches). She was selected to the South Jersey All-Star game, the New Jersey State All-Star game and was named Gloucester County Times Player of the Year as a senior. Scaffidi graduated as the program’s second all-time leading scorer and the Washington Township High School Athlete of the Year. She currently works as an assistant basketball coach at Shippensburg University where she scored 1,583 points as a student-athlete. Todd Strassberger (Class of 2001) – volleyballA three-year letterwinner in volleyball, Todd Strassberger received the team’s Rookie of the Year Award in 1999. He earned First Team All-Conference distinction as the team’s MVP in 2000 and served as team captain in 2001, guiding his squad to its best finish in the state tournament. A member of the 2001 Olympic Conference championship team, he was named First-Team All-State, First -Team All-Conference, First -Team All-South Jersey and South Jersey Player of the Year as a senior while garnering team awards as MVP, defensive player of the year, most kills and most digs. Strassberger played four seasons of club volleyball at Rutgers University and played professionally on the pro beach circuit. Chad Tomlin (Class of 1997) – volleyballA founding member of the Washington Township High School volleyball team, Chad Tomlin earned First -Team All-Conference, Player of the Year honors and Offensive Player of the Year honors in 1997. As a team captain, he tallied the most blocks by his squad and went on to play three seasons of NCAA Division 1 volleyball at Rutgers-Newark where his squads ranked second on the East Coast and as high as fifth in the nation. He was highly competitive as a member of USA Volleyball following college and was co-founder and co-captain of a Garden Empire Volleyball Association team in 2005. Melissa Venturi (Class of 2003) – lacrosse, soccerA four-year letterwinner in both lacrosse and soccer, Melissa Venturi concluded an outstanding athletic career with a number individual accolades and records. As a lacrosse senior, she established new school marks for most career assists (104), most goals in one season (81) and most career goals (213). Upon her graduation in 2003, she was the only player in South Jersey to have amassed more than 200 goals. Team MVP and recipient of the Coaches Award, Venturi was named First -Team All -Olympic Conference, First -Team All-South Jersey by the Women’s Lacrosse Club of South Jersey, Courier Post Second-Team All-South Jersey and All-South Jersey Senior All-Star participant as a senior. She was a member and named MVP of the South All-Stars in the New Jersey Lacrosse Jamboree. Venturi tallied 90 goals and 36 assists during a four-year NCAA Division 1 lacrosse career at George Mason University. Mike Weis (Class of 1985) – soccerA member of the All-Conference and All-County teams in 1983 and 1984, Mike Weis was a member of WTHS teams that compiled records of 17-3-1, 13-3-1 and 13-4-2, with six of the 10 losses in that span coming in postseason play. Three–time letterwinner and co-captain of the 1984 team, he scored 13 goals and assisted on 14 and was honored as a member of the following teams as a senior: Courier-Post All-Group IV, Olympic Conference, Gloucester County Times All-County, New Jersey Coaches Association All-State Group IV, New Jersey Coaches Association All-South Jersey and Philadelphia Inquirer All-South Jersey. He also earned two varsity letters in baseball. |
