are digital audio Books?
Digital audio books are downloadable versions of audio books, similar to what you might find in a cassette or CD format.
These audio books can be downloaded to you computer and used offline. Some can be transferred to portable audio devices, or even burned to CD.
What
you need
Digital audio books can be used on a variety of machines depending on the type of device and operating system. Free software for supported PCs, laptops, and PDAs is available from the digital book site. The site offers digital audio books in the OverDrive Media Console format, which relies in Windows Media Player technology.
To access digital books, you will need:
· Access to the Internet
· Free software for the machine on which you wish to use your digital book
· Your library barcode (see below) and password (your last name)
o For students your barcode is your student ID number
o For staff your barcode is your voicemail extension
Step 1: Download the Overdrive Media Console
(This step only needs to be completed the first time you download an audio book)
You will need to install free software on the computer (s)
on which you want to use digital books.![]()
Click the icon for system requirements and further instructions
At the download page, click on the 'Overdrive Media Console' link
Select option 'save' or 'Save this program to disk'. Browse to a location to save the file, click 'OK' to download the Overdrive Media Console and install the file.
Select Run or locate the ODMediaConsoleSetup.exe file, and double-click to begin installation.
Click the Next Button to begin installation.
Review the "Software License Agreement," and select the "I Agree" option. Click the Next button
At the 'Select Installation Folder' screen, either browse to the location to which you would like to save the program, or leave the default location.
Click the 'Next button to start installation.
When the Installation is complete, the installation Complete window will be displayed.
Step 2: Log into the Overdrive Catalog
Click
on the "Free Audio Book Downloads" Icon
You will need to enter your username / barcode and password (last name)
o For students your username / barcode is your student ID number
o For staff your username / barcode is your voicemail extension
Step 3: Check out and download Audio books
You can now search or browse the catalog of audio books
Click on the title of the audio book you have selected.
This page will provide more information about the audio book including the length, file size and an excerpt.
The Digital Rights Information will indicate if the title can be burned to a CD
To select the title, click "Add to Cart"
Please note: Titles added to your cart will remain there for 30 minutes before they are returned to the library's collection. Please be sure to complete your checkout within this timeframe to avoid losing access to your desired title(s).
Click Proceed to Checkout then Confirm your Check out
Once the book is check out Click "Download Book"
Select a location to save the file then Click OK
Click OK again to download the parts of the title
**Speed of download will depend on the size of the file as well as the speed of your Internet connection
Use the buttons on the Overdrive Media Console to Play, Transfer or Burn the title.
At the end of the digital book loan period, the title will expire and be automatically "returned" to the library. At this time, you can delete the expired file from your computer.
