The Assignment
Part I, Biography
Major events in the writer’s life (focus on events that may have truly changed him/her as a person/as a writer)
Part II, Time period (about 1 ˝ pages):
Describe the style of writing in the time period during which s/he wrote (e.g., Victorian, Modern)
Explain how your writer’s style was similar to the other major writers of the period (i.e., how it was representa
tive of the period)Explain how s/he differed from the other major writers (i.e., what s/he brought to the period that was unique)
Part III, Criticism (about two pages): This section is on one important short story, novel, play, or poem—Or, if they are short, two poems—by your author, and what has been written about the work(s) (i.e., critical response).
Discuss the major characters (for poems, the speaker and any characters)
Describe the setting
Outline the major events in the plot of the novel or each
short story; for poems, give a detailed description of the content of the poem (i.e., describe what the poem is about)Discuss the themes that appear in the work(s)
Minimum--five
full pages; maximum--six pagesTyped in MLA format
Include citati
