Fitnessgram is a fitness assessment and reporting program for youth, first developed in 1982 by The Cooper Institute in response to the need for a comprehensive set of assessment procedures in physical education programs. The assessment includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests that assess aerobic capacity; muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility; and body composition. Scores from these assessments are compared to Healthy Fitness Zone® standards to determine students' overall physical fitness and suggest areas for improvement when appropriate.
The Cooper Institute, a non-profit organization, has joined forces with the National Football League to launch FITNESSGRAM® into schools and after-school community organizations. This team effort has been created to promote physical activity and combat the obesity epidemic that is challenging our youth. Physical activity and fitness are not only important to improve health. Recent studies have indicated that physical activity and fitness levels are associated with improved academic outcomes, including academic performance, attendance and discipline (i.e. truancy, drugs, alcohol, and violence). PLAY 60 is the NFL’s national youth health and fitness campaign, focused on making the next generation of kids the most active and healthy by encouraging them to be active for at least 60 minutes a day.
