In first grade, the students will have a page of homework Monday through Thursday. This page should be returned in the take home folder daily. I believe the purpose of homework in first grade is to begin the good study habits of completing homework and returning it daily as the "student's" responsibility, not the guardians. Also, and most importantly, your child should be bringing home a "baggie book" every day. This book is a leveled book that your child should be able to read independently. Please make sure your child is reading this book for fluency and expression. Also, be sure to be checking your child's comprehension and understanding of this book. Then, if time allows, have your child read more or be sure to read to your child daily. Research has shown the best way to improve your child's reading ability is to read and be read to- the more minutes engaged the more improved your child's ability will be.
