I have been teaching 8th grade Social Studies at BHMS since 2001, and this year I will also be teaching two 7th grade Social Studies classes. Prior to teaching at Bunker Hill, I taught at St. Stephen's in Pennsauken. Teaching is a second career for me. I went back to Rowan University to obtain my education degree when my two children were in elementary school. I have also worked as an usher for the Phillies for 12 seasons, so I was fortunate enough to see them win the 2008 World Series.
I have lived in Washington Township since 1987. I enjoy reading, traveling, walking, visiting the Jersey shore, and going to concerts (I also used to work at the BB&T Center for three summers, when it was called the Tweeter Center). I love my job as a teacher and enjoy getting to know every one of my students. I was fortunate enough to be selected as the 2004-2005 Teacher of the Year at Bunker Hill, and I was a Fellow in two History Fellowship Programs, which allowed me to bring much more historical content to my lessons through the resources that I have access to. The first was through Delsea High School called the Ben Franklin History Fellowship. I participated in this for five years, along with a high school and elementary school teacher from Washington Township. After that, I participated in the Ida B. Wells Liberty Fellowship, along with other History, Social Studies, and English Teachers from the district, and that lasted for four years.
This year we will be learning about how the early colonists declared independence, the American Revolution, the creation of the Constitution and the formation of a new nation, the early Republic, Manifest Destiny, the worlds of the North and South, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. The social studies program we will be using is from TCI. Our district adopted this online program a few years ago at the middle school level. The TCI program is designed to reach learners of all abilities using multiple intelligences teaching strategies and theory and research-based active instruction.
This year some of our topics will be: the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, The Roman Catholic Church in Medieval Europe, Life in Medieval Towns, the Origins and Spread of Islam, Muslim Innovations and Adaptations, the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Age of Exploration, and several topics pertaining to West Africa.
