Welcome back to school!

Here is what's happening for Aug/Sept. 2018:

Our new second graders in Room 105 will be spending time learning our classroom routines, getting to know each other, and just getting settled back into their "school mode."

Class Lists:  emails will be sent detailing how to get your child's classroom assignment online; class lists will be made available on Friday, Aug. 24th.

1st Day of School:  Students' first day is Wednesday, Aug. 29th.  Second graders will be escorted from their buses and taken to the gym, where the 2nd teachers will meet them.  Please look for the family letter to arrive by mail for more information.

School Closings:  there will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, Aug. 31st and Monday, Sept. 3rd in observance of Labor Day.  There is also a school closing on 9/19 for teacher in-service.

Curriculum information will be discussed during our Back to School Night on Thursday, September 13, 2018 @7pm.  Please check the website regularly for updates.

Curriculum Notes:

Writing:  The children will get the chance to write about small moments in their lives for the Personal Narrative unit. They will learn to develop ideas, sketch and elaborate, revise and edit, then finally publish and share their pieces during Writing Workshop.  Their writing will be enhanced through the reading of mentor texts to study author's craft, as well as through the study of grammar and structure using mentor sentences from familiar texts.

Reading:  The reading unit focuses on the habits of good readers:  making connections, predicting, visualizing, asking questions, summarizing, and evaluating.  Students will work to improve comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and extending vocabulary.  We will also be practicing procedures and learning how to use our materials during Reader's Workshop.

Fundations:  In the first few units of Level 2, the class will review concepts learned in Level 1:  digraphs, consonant blends, digraph blends, and blending/segmenting up to 6 sounds in one word.  There will also be much emphasis on closed syllables, which make the vowel short.  The k, c, or ck spelling pattern will also be introduced.  Homework will not be given until the start of Unit 1.

Math:  In Unit 1, the class will focus on routines regarding the use of math tools and materials, working in groups, technology, etc. while reviewing numbers and number sequences.

Science:  Science will be taught in M.P. 2

Social Studies:  The children will participate in community building activities to get to know each other, practice problem solving strategies, promote kindness and respect, and to take ownership of their learning environments.  The first Social Studies unit will review map skills, as well as attributes of different regions, such as landforms, weather/climate, and natural resources.
