Mrs. Christine Alcavage
Hello, I would like to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about my background. This school year will be my 32nd year of teaching. I began my teaching career as a permanent substitute at Bells School in 1989. I was then hired at Hurffville School and worked here from Sept. 1989- June 2004. I taught a Primary Self-Contained Special Education Class my first year and then taught fourth grade from Sept. 1990-January 1996 when I left to have my daughter Danielle. I returned the following September as a part-time special education teacher and then had my son Derek in March of 1998. I continued teaching at Hurffville until June of 2004. I decided to transfer back to Bells School in Sept. of 2004 as a part time Special Education Teacher and loved it there, but I needed to return to a full-time position since my daughter was starting college. I interviewed with Mr. Pollock and he offered me the job in 2012; so that is how I returned to my Hurffville Family once again! I have taught every grade level from first through sixth! For the past four years I have been teaching 5th grade science, social studies, math and resource math classes too. This is year I will also be teaching ELA!
I graduated from Glassboro State College, (currently known as Rowan University) with a major in Special Education and a minor in Psychology. I am dually certified in elementary and special education as well as highly qualified in mathematics. I have also attended Rowan University for many graduate courses in Elementary Education, Guidance Counseling, and Middle School Math. I am currently involved in some Personal Leaning Networks on Twitter, am on our district Future Ready Committee, and am a member of the planning committee for our district's EdCamp.
I have been happily married to my husband, Dan for 26 years and we have two children and a dog. My daughter Danielle is a preschool teacher but current works at Auto Lenders and my son Derek is just graduated from Gwynedd Mercy University with an Accounting degree and is working as a mortgage funder and closer at Freedom Mortgage. Our other family member is a 5 ½-year old Boxer mix named Roxie, that we rescued 4 years ago! My family and I live in Washington Township where both of my children were involved in sports and many other activities when they were younger. We like to vacation in both the winter and summer. We usually go skiing during the winter and then somewhere tropical in the summer.
Some of my favorite hobbies and activities are reading, working out, baking, shopping, and watching my students play sports (since my kids are too old now.) I also run two direct sales businesses in the health and wellness industry called Juice Plus+ and Melaleuca. I have been a wellness coordinator for Juice Plus+ for 11 years. In that job I teach people about health and nutrition, making healthy food choices, how to grow their own fruits and vegetables aeroponically and incorporating exercise into their daily schedules. I started with Melaleuca in April of 2020 in order to enhance our immune systems and to get non-toxic cleaning products in our home. Helping people get healthier is another passion of mine!
