    • Today is day three of School Violence Awareness Week and Red Ribbon Week. There are things that you can do to protect yourself from the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Think of a sport, or hobby, that you really enjoy doing or that you would like to try for the first time!
    • Secondly, choose friends that support positive activities in your life, and make sure these friends share your goals to stay away from drugs and alcohol. Third, have a conversation with your guardians about drugs. Share your goal with them about remaining drug and alcohol free.
    • Finally, be careful which TV shows, video games, and movies you choose to watch or play. Make sure that they only promote positive activities and messages.
    • Take a minute and think about things you are interested in. What are some of your hobbies? What sports are you involved in? Share a list of hobbies with a friend. What hobbies do you have in common, or which ones would you like to try? How will these hobbies and interests keep you drug and alcohol free?

Each week, during September/October we honor contemporary difference makers of Hispanic Heritage. We honor these celebrities, not because of their fame or riches, but for what they do with that fame or wealth. Specifically, we celebrate them for their philanthropy and service to others. Last week we recognized Pitbull. In week 2 we honor Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor for her children's book, Just Ask. Be Different. Be Brave. Be You. This book celebrates the differences in all of us and how people who have various medical needs or physical limitations have numerous talents that allow all of us to be bonded through a common purpose. She advocates that by establishing relationships with each other, we are stronger and more productive than when we are on our own. Justice Sotomayor is the first person of Hispanic heritage and the third woman to ever serve on the Supreme Court

This week begins our recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month.  We honor American celebrities from Hispanic Cultures, not because of their fame and wealth, but because of the life of service they lead.  During week one, we recognize singer/songwriter Pitbull (Armando Perez) for his work to support children's health and education.  Pitbull works extensively with Miami Children's Hospital and the Nicklaus Children's Hospital Foundation that supports research and care at the hospital.  Pitbull volunteers his time to spend with the children at the Miami hospital and uses his fortune to support the foundation's research.
