WTHS Orchestra Students to Play Cupid with Valentine Music-grams
Unsuspecting Washington Township High School students and staff members may receive an unexpected treat during their lunch periods on Wednesday, February 14th when orchestra students approach them and break into song. The musical interludes - Valentine music-grams- come complete with a bag of Valentine candy and a personalized message.
Orchestra students rallied for the fundraising idea beginning in 2013 and their classmates have embraced the concept ever since. For a five-dollar donation, students can choose from one of four songs (“L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole; “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley; “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran; “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz) to be shared with their valentine. The orchestra students track down the song recipients during their lunch periods, present them with the candy and message and then play for the lucky recipients and their friends, many of whom, in the past, have videotaped the moment on their cell phones and joined in by singing along.
Some 60 music-grams were pre-ordered with all proceeds benefitting the WTHS Orchestra Scholarship Fund.
Orchestra Director Judy Pagon, who brainstormed the idea, oversees the Valentine ventures of the student-musicians. They will be playing in the school’s two cafeterias from 10:05 a.m. through approximately 1:15 p.m.
