Wedgwood Elementary Fourth-Grade Class Organizes Supply Drive for Pets Displaced by Hurricanes
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Wedgwood Elementary School fourth-grade teachers Lisa DiGrazio and Maria Petruzzelli and their class recently organized a supply collection to assist those pets who have been displaced by hurricanes along the Gulf of Mexico and the southeastern United States.
With many of the pets coming to shelters in New Jersey, Wedgwood is working through the organization Do it Duo for Pets to provide assistance. Do it Duo for Pets representatives Mary and Lucy Miles came to Wedgwood on Tuesday, September 19, to pick up the items.
In addition, Mary and Lucy issued the students an award and provided goodie bags that included a pet magnet, pin and information about the organization. The drive was open to all Wedgwood students and staff.
Lucy Miles and Alex Dompier, known as the “Do it Duo,” started their organization in the wake of Superstorm Sandy in 2013, when they were just 11 years old. They were watching the hurricane relief concert and saw pictures of the displaced pets, so they came up with a mission to help as many of these pets as possible. They quickly formed the “Do It Duo for Pets,” drawing up a flyer and a doodle of a paw print, then began collecting supplies. Their little mission has turned into an organization now, distributing food and supplies to domestic animals and assisting shelters that house displaced and surrendered pets during disaster recovery.
