Wedgwood Elementary School Uses Picture Graph to Show They’re Fully Behind the Philadelphia Eagles
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Super Bowl Fever has spread through Wedgwood Elementary School and into math class. Mrs. Patricia Harvie's, Miss Melissa Toton's, and Mr. Domenick Renzi's third-grade students used the Super Bowl as a way to bring scaled picture graphs to life.
The students started by surveying all of the staff and students to see who they would be rooting for to win the Super Bowl. While votes were being cast, the third-graders began coloring and cutting footballs to be used in the picture graph. After all ballots were returned, the third-graders used calculators to find the sum of the votes for both the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots. The final tally revealed that 60 votes were cast for the New England Patriots, and 460 votes were cast for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Then it was time to plan for the graph.
“I think we better use one football to equal 20 votes, otherwise we will be making footballs all day,” suggested third-grader Emily McCrea.
The class agreed and the graph key was all set. With one football equaling 20 votes, 23 footballs were used to represent the Eagles' votes, while just three footballs were needed for the Patriots' votes. Selected members from the classes assisted with the construction of the picture graph in the hallway for all to see, leaving no doubt that Wedgwood School is rooting for the Eagles.
