Cat Gives Read-a-Thon a Push
Hurffville Elementary School Welcomes the Cat in the Hat as Part of its Read-a-Thon Kickoff
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – In past years, Hurffville Elementary School used a short skit featuring staff members to try to drum up excitement for its month-long read-a-thon. On Monday, February 5th, they left it to a bigger star to kick things off in 2018.
The Cat in the Hat, the traveling mascot provided by the New Jersey Education Association, visited Hurffville to give high-fives and hugs and help drive the reading numbers up across the school. During February, the entire student body’s reading will be tracked via Accelerated Reader.
Hurffville has selected Dr. Seuss as its theme for the 2018 Read-a-thon. On Monday, Principal Jeff Pollock intermittently came over the loudspeaker and read parts of the book The Cat in the Hat. That was to continue all day. In addition, each day during the Read-a-thon, Hurffville students will engage in “Read Around Hurffville,” where they take to the hallways for periods of time to sit and have quiet reading time.
