WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Washington Township High School Department of Athletics has always wanted to find a way to recognize the great work that the school’s student-athletes do in the classroom, in addition to their success on the field. So, this past summer, Director of Athletics Kevin Murphy created the Athletic Director’s Cup, which would go to the athletic program with the top combined academic performance and athletic achievement from the previous school year.
The inaugural Athletic Director’s Cup was presented to the boys volleyball team and head coach Barb McBrearty earlier this week. The Minutemen volleyball squad produced a remarkable combined grade-point average (GPA) of 96, while also enjoying their best season ever by winning Gloucester County Cup and Olympic Conference championships.
“We have always monitored the academic success of our student-athletes and marveled at how well they perform in the classroom,” Murphy said. “It was long overdue to introduce an award that recognizes a program’s commitment to being the best in the classroom and the athletic area. It was a remarkable accomplishment by the boys volleyball team. They were champions on the court and in the classroom.”
WTHS had 22 athletic programs come in with GPAs above 91, and the entire student-athlete population produced a cumulative GPA of 90.8.
