Honoring November's Top Student-Athlete
Washington Township High School Names Gia Karavangelas as November Student-Athlete of the Month Award Winner
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Senior cheerleader Gia Karavangelas has been named the Washington Township High School Student-Athlete of the Month for November 2019. The WTHS Department of Athletics is proud to recognize a student-athlete each month during the 2019-20 school year who embodies selfless play and a commitment to their team while promoting team unity and positively influencing team culture both academically and athletically. WTHS’s partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance has helped to produce an athletic culture of “Honoring the Game,” encouraging athletes to respect all aspects of their sport. The student-athlete of the month demonstrates this commitment.
Karavangelas is a four-year varsity cheerleader for both the fall and winter teams. She has been a part of the school’s very successful competition program all four years, and she was voted as captain by her peers for her senior year. In addition, Karavangelas was selected the past two years as a National Cheerleading Association All-America Cheerleader through a tryout process.
Karavangelas is also a star student, ranked sixth in her class with a 1,540 score on the SAT. She was a commended student in the National Merit Scholarship program and was recognized by the Brooks-Irvine Football Club with a Scholar-Athlete Cheerleading Award this year.
“Gia is truly a student-athlete who our entire team respects as a tremendous role model,” WTHS cheerleading coach Jenny Kerfoot said.
“Gia has demonstrated the importance of student-athlete leadership on her teams, placing the needs of the team above her own,” WTHS assistant principal and director of athletics Kevin Murphy said. “She is a two-sport captain who unified her teams in pursuit of being the best teammate she could be all the time.”
