WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Orchard Valley Middle School students (and sisters) Tatiana Stewart (eighth grade) and Tamara Stewart (sixth grade) along with their younger sister, Tia, have been very busy making fabric masks for those who need them in the community. Together with their mother, Xuan, they have made several hundred masks and donated them to local hospitals.
The Stewarts then wanted to spread their love in more directions. So, they then began making masks for dialysis patients, and soon after began distributing them to local elderly people and anyone else who needed one. They were inspired to make the masks because they have many family friends who are sick and need a mask to stay safe.
The sisters said that their masks are made out of a primary layer of cotton and then a non-woven fabric that acts as a filter for the second layer. They have been working on this project for the last few weeks while schools are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tatiana Stewart said that, once they finish their remote learning assignments in the morning, they fill their time in the afternoons making masks. It’s a great way to spend time with family and do good things for the community in difficult times.
