Lauding Lunch Ladies
Washington Township School District Honors Food Service “Heroes” on Friday, May 7th
Birches Elementary School provided large posters thanking lunch ladies (l to r) Jeannine Lanoza, Avis Nardelli, and Marianne Massimino for all they do on National School Lunch Hero Day.
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The term “unsung hero” gets attributed to a lot of different people, but when it comes to the food service workers in the Washington Township Public Schools – especially throughout the Covid-19 pandemic – it’s as accurate as it gets.
On Friday, May 7th, the District joined the School Nutrition Association in celebrating the eighth annual National School Lunch Hero Day. The staff was recognized for their dedication, hard work, tenacity, and ability to adapt to change on a daily basis.
“In March of 2020, our normal operation just stopped,” Washington Township food service manager Jennifer Mullin said. “Everything that we were used to doing changed, and we only had one day to adjust to the ‘new normal.’ We stopped serving meals for one day only. On March 17th, we were serving meals remotely, with lots of help from the Operations and Transportation staff, out of the high school 9/10 parking lot. No one ever thought we would not fully open until April 26, 2021. But our staff never wavered; we just did it!”
In honor of National School Lunch Hero Day, the Washington Township Education Foundation (WTEF) donated T-shirts emblazoned with “Heroes Work Here” on the front for the staff to wear on May 7th.
“The WTEF was honored to present our hard-working food service folks with their National School Lunch Hero Day T-shirts,” WTEF president Charlie Doud said. “Each and every day, even during a pandemic, they are here for our kids, taking care them all like they would their own children.”
