Egg-cellent Engineering!
Rowan’s “Engineers on Wheels” Program Hosts Egg Drop Experiment at Orchard Valley Middle School
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Rowan University’s “Engineers on Wheels” program returned to Orchard Valley Middle School for a fun and creative “egg drop” experiment on Thursday, April 4, 2019. Engineers on Wheels is an educational outreach program that has Rowan students traveling to K-12 schools to introduce students to the field of engineering, with the hope of getting – and keeping – those students interested in the field.
At OVMS, the engineers’ team is making six visits to Mrs. Kristen Eichinger’s sixth-grade class. On the first visit, they brainstormed ideas by figuring out what the students know already. They helped them develop a curriculum for future visits.
On Thursday, Rowan students Joe Egan, Ed Garcia, Alyssa Grassie, Nick DePersia, Kyle Hauske and Mandi Basantis took the sixth-graders through the egg drop experiment. Each group of four students were given a variety of materials – paper cups, paper scraps, pieces of poster board, string, rubber bands and more – and an egg. The object: each group had to create a device that would protect the egg from cracking when dropped from the ceiling.
Several of the groups did versions of a parachute, while others tried to provide as much protection around the egg as possible. In the end, three of the six groups managed to save the life of their egg.
