It's Scarecrow Time!
District Fifth-Grade Classrooms Taking Part in Annual Scarecrow Contest at Duffield’s
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Scarecrow Museum is open for business. The Washington Township Public Schools partners with Duffield’s Farm Market each fall for a contest involving each of the District’s fifth-grade classrooms, and those classes have been busy preparing scarecrows for the past several weeks.
At all six elementary schools, homerooms get together to pick out a scarecrow character. The character must be from a book they are reading in class, or of a famous person they are studying in social studies. Duffield’s, which sponsors the contest, provides hay and posts to each class to help in their construction.
Finished scarecrows are now on display in the “museum” at Duffield’s, located in a greenhouse not far from the picnic area and Pumpkin Land. Visitors can vote for their favorite scarecrow – manager Tracey Duffield has said upwards of 10,000 votes are cast – and the grand prize-winning class receives a party at the farm market, including a hayride and pizza.
