Gloucester County Education Association Honors Bob Abbott
Washington Township Board of Education vice president Bob Abbott accepted the Gloucester County Education Association’s “Linda Martins Friend of Education Award,” during a ceremony on April 13, 2018, at Scotland Run Golf Club.
The award was re-named at the ceremony in honor of former Chestnut Ridge Middle School teacher Linda Martins, who passed away in January of 2017 following a long and impactful career in the Washington Township Public Schools.
The Linda Martins Friend of Education Award is presented annually to educators, elected officials, and/or community members who have shown exemplary service to public education. Past recipients include former Washington Township Mayor Barbara Wallace and current New Jersey Education Association President Marie Blistan (a long-time teacher in the Washington Township Public Schools).
Abbott has been a Washington Township resident for nearly a half century. He has served on the Board of Education for the past five years. His late wife, Eileen, was a 27-year member of the Board. The Abbotts have three children who attended school in Washington Township. Bob Abbott, who is retired, is an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and participates in numerous community and school activities and organizations.
“The award meant a great deal to me, especially because they renamed it for Linda Martins, a great woman, teacher and friend,” Abbott said. “I was honored to receive it.”
