WTHS Senior Chad Yates Named December 2018 Student-Athlete of the Month
Washington Township High School senior Chad Yates has been named the December 2018 Student-Athlete of the Month. The award is given monthly to a student-athlete who embodies selfless play, a commitment to his/her team, promotes team unity and positively influences team culture, both academically and athletically.
Arguably the most decorated soccer player in the history of the Minuteman program, Yates capped his stellar career in December by earning a spot on the United Soccer Coaches Association All-America All-East Region Team. He was named the 2018 New Jersey State Player of the Year by NJ.com, as well as the South Jersey Player of the Year by the Courier Post and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Yates played a key role in the team’s third state championship season, scoring 26 goals and adding 11 assists. He will continue his academic and soccer career at Rowan University this fall.
“Our school’s partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance has helped to produce an athletic culture of ‘Honoring the Game’, encouraging athletes to respect all aspects of their sport,” WTHS director of athletics and assistant principal Kevin Murphy said. “Chad is a selfless teammate devoted to his team goals. He is a young man who had a positive effect on our State Championship team culture, leaving behind a legacy of resilience.”
“Chad plays the game with passion and drive, a relentless worker who led both on and off the field,” head coach Shane Snyder said of his standout. “He is a true team player who always placed the needs of the team first.”
