Celebrating Karneval
Bunker Hill Middle School German Students Celebrate Holidays of Karneval, Weiberfastnacht
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Students in Herr Mike McCloskey's German classes at Bunker Hill Middle School concluded a mini unit on Karneval (also known as Fastnacht or Fasching) by enjoying German food, including traditional seasonal Fastnachts donuts, on Tuesday, March 5th.
A major part of the celebration included festivities for the women's day of Karneval, known as Weiberfastnacht, which takes place the Thursday before Fat Tuesday. On this day, women symbolically take control of the city of Cologne, Germany, and cut ties that men are wearing as a symbol of their power.
The BHMS students followed it true to form, with the girls in the class snipping ties the boys wore. Instead of a real kiss to the half-tied boys, the girls presented them with Hershey’s versions in return. The ties were generously donated by Philly AIDS Thrift Store.
