Wedgwood Fourth-Graders Master Math; Create Masterpieces
Wedgwood Elementary School fourth-graders in Maryann Garten’s class used a lesson on symmetry from BSI math teacher Domenick Renzi to craft a “Museum of Symmetry,” using their math skills to create masterpieces to showcase in their classroom. The students’ classmates were invited to tour the museum which showcased symmetrical designs that they created on magnetic white boards. The project was funded through a Washington Township Education Foundation grant.
After learning about symmetry in nature and man-made things, the students worked independently using the magnetic pattern blocks to create a symmetrical design with at least one line of symmetry. The pattern blocks were placed onto magnetic boards for easy manipulation, trial-and-error, and display. Students focused on slides and rotations, as they strategically placed the pattern blocks. Upon completion of the symmetrical pattern block art, various classes at Wedgwood School entered the “Museum of Symmetry.” Schoolmates walked through the classroom checking out the many masterpieces to learn about symmetry and experience one way in which math and art are integrated.
