As part of their Week of Kindness (March 4-8), members of Washington Township High School’s Project Unify created simulations on autism and communication disorders during a Disability Fair on March 7th. The Fair was designed to bring focus and awareness of disabilities to all juniors and seniors at the school.
Sponsored under the umbrella of Special Olympics of New Jersey, Project Unify is a club whose goal is to activate young people to have true cultures of inclusiveness between special and regular education students. The activities promote socialization, skill development and teamwork.
“Using our ‘Choose to Include’ theme, the Disability Fair was a true collaboration that we hope will give all of our students information and help them to develop empathy,” WTHS teacher and Project Unify Coordinator Jan Brodzinski said.
Among other fair activities, students in the school’s Tomorrow’s Teachers program created trifold disability awareness posters. District vision specialist Kim Mastroianni conducted blindness simulations using goggles, canes and a Braille typewriter.
