Towers of Tangrams
Wedgwood Elementary School Third-Grade Students Enjoy Tangram Project Thanks to Education Foundation Grant
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Thanks to a mini-grant from the Washington Township Education Foundation, Wedgwood Elementary School third-grade students in Mrs. Patricia Harvie and Mr. Domenick Renzi's math class extended their lessons on geometric shapes by learning about the history of tangrams.
The tangram is an ancient Chinese dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put together to form a shape or picture.
The students manipulated the seven pieces to improve spatial relationship skills and complete various tangram puzzles. Then, the students used the tans to design their own tangram pictures. Those pictures were displayed on a tangram tower for all to see. The students enjoyed integrating math and art as they learned about geometric puzzles using the tans.
