Wedgwood Elementary School Running Club Honors World Down Syndrome Day by Completing 3.21 Miles
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Wedgwood Elementary School Third-Grade Running Club is celebrating World Down Syndrome Day in a special way. The students have spent the past few weeks tracking their mileage with a goal of running a total of 3.21 miles by today, March 21st – World Down Syndrome Day.
This was the running club’s way of participating in the Running for 3.21 event, sponsored by the National Down Syndrome Society. This “virtual race” allows participants and advocates to run, walk, bike, hike, swim and/or move for 3.21 miles at any time, any place, and at any pace on March 21, 2019, to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day and raise awareness for the Down syndrome community.
“I am so proud of these kids. Their perseverance was unbelievable!” club advisor MaryGrace Parchesky said. “They ran laps in the gym when it rained and outside on cold days. They got faster, and their stamina improved. Most of all, I love when they arrive at school and ask me, ‘Are we running today?’ It has been such a great experience to be able to share my love of running with them while promoting Down syndrome awareness.”
