Chess on the Turf
District Elementary Students, Teams Excel at Chess Tournament Held at Total Turf Experience
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Washington Township elementary school students attended the inaugural “Chess Tourney on the Turf” on Saturday, April 13th, at Total Turf Experience and returned with plenty of honors and hardware.
Washington Township students from nearly each elementary school participated in the tournament with students from Pitman, Mullica Hill and Blackwood.
In the intermediate division, Bells Elementary School took the team first place honor, followed by Whitman Elementary in second place, Hurffville in third and Birches in fourth. Individually, the first-place winner was Garhett Hardy from Bells, while Bells’ Logan Walsh and Cody Halicks finished third and fourth, respectively. Whitman’s Sanaa Mehta took fifth place.
In the advanced division, it was once again Bells taking the team first prize followed by Thomas Jefferson Elementary in second. Individually, Bells had the top four finishers, including Brooke Jones (first), Jeremy Engber (second), Elizabeth Tsoukalis (third) and Cody Pozniewski (fourth). TJ’s Colin Donnelly finished fifth.
The tournament was organized by Bells Elementary School teacher and Chess Club advisor James Cho.
