WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The smell of glue was in the air, and the little pieces of colored paper were flying around, but for the elementary school students across the Washington Township School District on Friday morning, June 2, 2017, the focus was on the task at hand. With help from Washington Township High School seniors and other volunteers from the township, the elementary students were creating mason jar lanterns as part of the District’s second annual “Spring in Service” day.
More than 750 students took part in the event, with approximately 100 WTHS seniors helping those elementary students with the project. Spring in Service was created to establish a joint service project between students in all grades.
On Friday morning, high school students – taking part in WTHS’s 17th annual Senior Service Day – arrived at the elementary schools and met the young students in grades 1-5 who had donated $10 to participate. Together, they made small glass lanterns using a mason jar, tissue paper (which was glued to the side of the jar) and battery-powered tea light candles. Once dry, the jars were individually bubble-wrapped for the students to take them home. Prior to Friday, middle school Future Acts students prepped the jars and supplies to be ready for the event.
All monies from the Lantern Project will be donated to families of several children in need in the District. The lantern idea was created by WTHS senior Lyndsey Ferraino, and the project was sponsored by Kennedy Health and hosted by the WTHS Changing Our World Project.
Students who took part in the project and purchased lanterns are invited, along with the entire community, to attend an Addiction Awareness Vigil on Monday, June 19, 2017, at Washington Lake Park. The vigil begins with live music and speakers at 7 p.m., with the lantern vigil starting at 8:15 p.m. Additional lanterns are expected to be available for purchase at the event.
